Ophthalmic surgical device designed to aid tear drainage

Lester Jones Tube or StopLoss Jones Tube

The Lester Jones tube is an ophthalmic surgical device designed to bypass a blockage in the lacrimal system and allows for tear drainage. This procedure is called a Conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy or CDCR and is critical for patients with lacrimal system disorders. This procedure is used to treat cases of serious stenosis, which can lead to excessive tearing, eye infections, and other problems. The device is named after its inventor, British ophthalmologist Henry Lester Jones and has been used for over 50 years to treat patients with lacrimal system disorders.

The tube is made of Pyrex and is available in several sizes to ensure the appropriate size is selected for each patient. It is inserted through the caruncle through a small incision made in the corner of the eye near the nose and left in place to allow tear drainage into the nose. The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia.

As a new alternative to the Lester Jones tube there is now available the StopLoss Jones Tube which have been found to achieve superior results. The StopLoss Jones Tube is a stent developed by FCI, a leading ophthalmic medical device company. Like the Lester Jones tube, the StopLoss Jones Tube is a stent designed to bypass the blockage in the tear duct and restore proper tear drainage. It is made of Pyrex material and is available in several sizes to accommodate different patient needs.

StopLoss Jones Tube better by Design

Lester Jones Tube has been replaced by the StopLoss Jones Tube

One of the unique features of the StopLoss Jones Tube is its design. The stent includes a silicone flange at the end of the tube that prevents it from migrating or falling out of position. This feature can help reduce the risk of complications and improve patient outcomes. The StopLoss Jones Tube is supplied by Veni Vidi Medical, a leading medical device supplier that specialises in ophthalmic products.

Choosing which stent to use in a CDCR depends on various factors such as the the surgeon's preferences and experience. The StopLoss Jones Tube does offer several advantages over the Lester Jones Tubes, including better retention rates and less issues with migration. Patients with lacrimal system disorders should consult with a qualified ophthalmologist or oculoplastic surgeon to determine the best course of treatment for their specific needs.

In summary, the Lester Jones Tube and the StopLoss Jones Tube are stents designed to bypass blockages in the lacrimal system and restore proper tear drainage. Both stents are made of Pyrex and are available in various sizes. However, the StopLoss Jones Tube includes a silicone flange at the end of the tube that prevents it from migrating or extruding (falling out), reducing the risk of complications. Additionally, it is supplied by Veni Vidi Medical, a leading medical device supplier that specialises in ophthalmic products. Patients with lacrimal system disorders should consult with a qualified ophthalmologist or oculoplastic surgeon to determine the best course of treatment for their specific needs.
